Overcome Periodontal Disease with Deep Teeth Cleaning Services

When you notice gum swelling or blood spots when brushing or flossing your teeth, it’s crucial to take action immediately. These symptoms indicate the presence of gum infection. If left untreated, gum disease progresses beneath your gingival tissues, affecting the teeth-supporting structures and possibly leading to an uneven bite or tooth loss.

If you suspect gum disease in Petaluma, California, please contact North Bay SmilesDr. Yvonne Szyperski and her team offer deep teeth cleaning, which includes dental scaling and root planing to manage mild to moderate gum disease.

Why is deep teeth cleaning necessary?

Gum disease develops in stages. The first stage is gingivitis, which exhibits mild symptoms, including red and swollen gums. Gingivitis can be reversed with diligent oral care and regular teeth cleanings.

If you don’t manage gingivitis, the gap between your teeth and gums widens as gums pull away (recede). This gap (sulcus) is usually between one to three millimeters in healthy gums. However, this depth may grow bigger due to gum disease, and your toothbrush and dental floss can’t effectively clean the deep pockets.

In such cases, you need the intervention of a dentist to remove accumulated dental calculus and harmful bacteria through deep teeth cleaning.

What does deep teeth cleaning involve?

This procedure involves at least two dental appointments. We also use anesthesia to minimize discomfort during the procedure — you’ll only feel pressure but not pain during treatment.

Following are the steps involved in a deep dental cleaning:

  • Diagnosis: We use dental X-rays and a periodontal probe to determine the severity of your gum infection
  • Scaling: After numbing your gums, we use ultrasonic instruments or manual scaling tools to eliminate dental calculus from your mouth
  • Root planing: We smooth rough spots on your roots. This step is crucial because bacteria have difficulty clinging to smooth surfaces
  • Antibiotic therapy: We may insert antibiotic gel in your periodontal pockets to reduce the infection
  • Posttreatment instructions: You’ll experience mild swelling, pain, or bleeding after treatment. These symptoms are normal and usually disappear after a few days. We’ll give you medication and home care instructions to minimize discomfort

After a deep dental cleaning, we’ll emphasize diligent home care to discourage new bacterial growth. You’ll also book follow-up visits with our office to monitor your treatment progress.
