Composite Fillings

Can composite fillings be used on the front teeth?

Tooth decay, or cavities, can occur to anyone. They are often caused by diets high in sugars and poor oral health habits. However, when spotted early, they are easy to treat with dental fillings. At North Bay Smiles of Petaluma, California, Dr. Yvonne Szyperski and her team of professionals are dedicated to providing local patients with the care they need to achieve the desired results–and restore teeth that have been impacted by disease or decay. Composite resin fillings can be used on the front teeth, back teeth, or even the molars to address such issues within the smile.

What are composite resin fillings?

Dr. Yvonne Szyperski describes composite resin fillings as tooth-colored materials used to fill an area of decay. Fillings are essential as they can restore the natural tooth’s function while protecting the inner canals and dental pulp of the tooth from infection. The filling seals up the inner portion of the tooth and stops the cavity and tooth decay from progressing. Composite resin fillings are much safer than other materials used in the past, such as silver amalgam fillings. These are comprised of approximately 50% mercury. Mercury is toxic to the human body and can result in neurological problems if it spreads elsewhere through the blood supply.

Where can composite resin fillings be used?

Our team may provide fillings anywhere in the smile where decay has developed, including the front teeth. Large areas of decay that compromise the natural tooth’s structure may also be treated with an additional layer of protection, such as a dental crown, to keep the tooth from being damaged with regular chewing and biting forces.
