Crowns and Bridges

How to Care for Dental Bridges

Dental bridges offer many advantages. They help people eat normally without pain, help avoid the pinched look in the face that loss of teeth produces, and look like regular teeth. However, dental bridges cannot work at their best unless they are taken care of properly. With a bit of luck and good care, most dental bridges last for at least ten years. At North Bay Smiles, in Cotati, California, we teach our patients how they can properly care for their dental bridges.

Daily Cleaning

Cleaning bridges is the same as cleaning regular teeth. Brush twice a day, floss at least once a day, and use an antiseptic mouthwash to prevent the build-up of bacteria that cause plaque, cavities, and gum disease. Let your dentist know if gums become painful or bleed easily.

Changes in Diet

Most people need to get temporary bridges before their permanent ones are ready. People with temporary bridges need to not only hard foods but avoid overly chewy foods like:

  • caramels
  • licorice
  • jerky
  • gum

Once permanent bridges are put in place, most food is okay to eat. However, though food can break the bridge. Sadly, a bridge will never be as tough as natural teeth. Avoid:

  • ice cubes
  • crunching on hard candy
  • hard bread

Make sure to never chew on non-food items like pens, pencils, fingernails, chewing tobacco, or shells of nuts. People who know they grind their teeth need to wear mouth guards.

What if There is Pain?

It is normal to experience mouth pain for the first few days of getting used to new dental bridges, especially when eating. However, if the pain persists for more than a week, see a dentist. The bridge may not be placed correctly. If it has been years and the bridges suddenly start hurting all of the time, then there may be decay under the crown that helps hold the bridge in place. See a dentist at once since this kind of pain always gets worse over time.

In Conclusion

Daily cleaning is as important for dental bridges as it is for natural teeth. Avoid tough foods, and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.
