While gum disease may not sound threatening at first, it’s worth noting that your oral health can turn for the worst if you don’t treat gum infection promptly. What starts as occasional gum bleeding quickly compromises your gums and teeth, and with no time, the infection seeps into the bloodstream, damaging vital organs, including the heart and kidneys!
If you spot signs of gum disease, don’t take it lightly. Instead, book an appointment with North Bay Smiles of Petaluma, California, for effective treatment. Dr. Yvonne Szyperski uses scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) to bring your gum disease under control. Please schedule an appointment today, and our dental team will restore your oral health to its former best.
When you have gum disease, pockets around your teeth deepen, facilitating tartar and other toxins to grow under the gum line. Since brushing and flossing can’t access these tight spots, we recommend scaling to remove calculus build-up on the tooth surface and below the gum line. Root planing is the smoothing out of the tooth roots to remove toxins and encourage the reattachment of gums onto your teeth.
Ultimately, the objective of scaling and root planing is to:
Deep cleaning is more intense than a typical dental cleaning. So, to reduce discomfort during the treatment, our dental team numbs your gums with a precise dosage of anesthesia. Next, the dental hygienist may use a scaler or ultrasonic treatment to eliminate plaque and hardened tartar. Then root planing smooths out the rough places and eliminates bacteria to keep gum disease at bay. In some cases, we may treat the gum pockets with locally administered antibiotics.
Of course, we will insist you continue brushing and flossing your teeth, but gently until your gums heal. On the next visit, we will check the progress of your gums to see whether the pockets have recovered from the infection. If the gum pockets are more than 3mm deeper, you may need additional treatment.
